TRIBUTE TO LEONARD COHEN

AVALANCHE QUARTET

Behind this wildly elegant project stands Henk Hofstede, lead singer of The Nits  who talks about its origin as follows : “In 1988, I had the privilege to meet Leonard Cohen in Brussels. He told me he liked the Nits a lot and proposed that we follow him on tour as his backing band. Due to schedule incompatibilities, it was not possible. Back then I had not measured what it represented. But afterwards, I often had cold sweat thinking about it”. As if to wipe this missed opportunity, the Dutch singer created in 2005 this poetical micro society dedicated to Cohen’s repertoire. Guitars, upright bass, accordion, piano, cajon and backing vocals shroud his mineral voice with subtle touches, reinventing without mimicking the magic of the Canadian’s standards (Suzanne, Bird on a Wire...), as well as his lesser known beauties (Take this Waltz, Night Comes on...) : each song is like an intimate celebration, a solemn feast. Cohen’s treasures lie here between good hands : those of honest minds and great musicians, to which they have always seemed to belong.
